The art of DVD replication

A DVD or digital versatile disc is an innovative creation of optical disc technology. A DVD is capable of storing seventeen gigabytes of data, which makes it ideal for information storage.

DVD replication is not the same as DVD duplication. In DVD replication, the data is transferred from the source master or the main source into several smaller DVD discs. DVD duplication is simply substituting a DVD for another one.

For the process of DVD replication the main source or the source master is firstly sent to the manufacturing plant for checking sectors that are unreadable. This is done so that damaged and defective discs are ruled out. The main step is to press the disc so that data can transfer from the main source to the master mould.

Using laser beams, grooves and pits are formed on the glass matter onto which the data gets transferred. The grooves form during the glass mastering when a nickel layer is pressed on to produce a stamper. The grooves copy themselves onto the stamper and become a part of the DVD disc. Finally, disc polycarbonate materials are created by moulding the grooves with the stampers.
