Retailing Your CD Album

Recent news that HMV has gone into administration fuels the question of how to retail your latest CD album. For many of the major labels the possible demise of HMV will surely leave the future of physical CD albums sales very much in the balance.

However for the smaller independent labels and self funded bands could this actually be positive news? If HMV shops stores close then these could result in a growth of smaller independent music stores and of subsequently a growth in the route to market for smaller labels.

For many years smaller labels have been able to self fund small manufacturing runs of albums by means of CD replication due to the abundance of CD broker companies providing the link between pressing plant and labels/self funded bands. Unfortunately though distribution deals to place album product in the larger HMV stores is always very challenging for the smaller labels. Who knows? perhaps a growth in smaller music stores, smaller independent distributors and indie labels may just be the future for the physical CD format.
