Stone Roses Reunion, New CD Album Possible?

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

Massive news for all Roses fans, the original line up are to re-form for a world tour and possible new CD Album. The band have already announced gigs at Heaton Park, Manchester on June 29th and June 30th.
When asked if a new album is possible frontman Ian Brown hinted “who knows?, we will write till the wheels fall off”….again.

Testa-Rossa Studios are very proud to see the Stone Roses reunite. As a Manchester based Recording Studio from the 90’s Testa-Rossa never experienced any direct bookings with the band but were involved in the official Stone Roses Remix CD album. The album featured the 808 State remix of “Made Of Stone” and studio owner Andy Drelincourt was credited as mix engineer.

Testa-Rossa would like to wish the Stone Roses every success with the new tour and any possible future album. Great to see the original line up of Brown, Squire, Mani and Reni. It has always been said that if the band were to re-form it was essential to re-kindle the Mani/Renni tight rhythm section of funky bass and drums.

The original self titled album “The Stone Roses” is iconically the best debut album of all time. The legendary production of the CD album by John Leckie saw the Roses break new ground in the world of indie and the Roses were considered pioneers of the Manchester music scene. Will Leckie return to produce a new album, I certainly hope so!

CD ROM replication pressing solutions.

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

Companies looking for the most cost efficient disc pressing solutions would usually consider CD ROM replication. This manufacturing method for optical discs yields very high quality CD’s at very reasonable costs. Pressing of discs can take between 1 and 2 weeks, usually dependant on size of order and any special packaging requirements.

The CD replication solution is usually preferable over duplication when orders are quite large, greater than around 350 discs. The end product of replication pressing is a CD-ROM that contains the data or audio embedded or “pressed” into the polycarbonate. This pressing ensures the information is permanently contained within the disc, unlike duplication where the information can deteriorate over the years.

Many media and print companies look to these replication solutions for mass production and copying of digital information. Despite advances in internet transfer of large data files the CD and DVD is still a preferred delivery format. Although these physical discs need to be distributed by normal transport methods the advantage is that the disc will enable a physical archive of its information.

The replicated CD-ROM is still used by most software companies for the distribution and retail of their products. We all know that it only takes a computer virus to result in the loss of digitally downloaded software. With a physical disc it always make re-install of important valuable software a lot smoother.

Supplying a .wav file for CD duplication.

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

So, you have a really tight deadline and are wondering if it is possible to supply a .wav file for CD duplication by email?

The answer to this is yes in theory, but it may not necessary speed up the order process. It is possible to email a .wav file if both the recipients and senders email accounts allow for that particular size of attachment. If the file exceeds this permissible size then the other option is to use the Testa-Rossa “you send it” dropbox. If you wish to supply .wavs for CD duplication by “you send it” please send us an email to request the dropbox link.

To proceed with an order using electronically transferred .wav files it is necessary to download the files and then produce a PMCD master. To produce this CD master there is normally a charge of approximately £25 + £1 per .wav file. For instance a master requiring 10 .wav files to be added would cost £35 to produce. During the production of this master it is also possible to add extra information such as CD text and ISRC codes.

Once the PMCD master has been burnt it is essential to post a copy of this master to the customer for approval. Due to the source .wav files being transferred electronically the best way to check for integrity is for the customer to listen to the CD master. During the creation of the master a disc read check will also be run to check for any read errors on the disc. These double checks of read errors and listening test will give the customer peace of mind that the duplicated CD’s will perform exactly as intended.

Disc Replication For Media Companies.

Monday, October 17th, 2011

All media companies and business’s will require either the replication of CD or DVD discs at some point. Most media companies have the facilities to create masters on a CD-R or DVD-R but very few have in-house facilities to copy these masters by way of duplication or replication.

Most media companies will therefore seek the professional services of a disc duplicator, broker or pressing plant. If the number of copies is relatively low, less than 400 discs, then a local duplicator can usually be sourced. However if the amount of discs exceeds 400 then a replication broker or pressing plant is usually the way forward.

Companies requiring regular large volumes of disc replication will usually have a direct business relationship with a pressing plant. For companies that only require glass mastering and disc pressing a few times a year a broker is usually more preferable. CD and DVD brokers usually have trade accounts with many worldwide pressing plants enabling them to source the best prices and leadtimes for their customers.

Some pressing plants specialise more in CD than DVD or vice versa. This results in quite a large variation in pricing and turnaround times. The broker can use their knowledge of the business to act on behalf of its media company customer to obtain the best possible manufacturing deals. In most cases this actually results in lower costs to the customer than dealing direct with a pressing plant.

Manchester DVD duplication services.

Friday, October 14th, 2011

Manchester based Testa-Rossa Studios Ltd offers a comprehensive range of DVD duplication services. Duplicated DVD discs are available from just 50 units and at very reasonable pricing. Discs are supplied with very high quality grayscale or full colour glossy print using the Rimage Everest method of thermal transfer.

DVD duplication prices with a range of packaging and print options can be found on the Manchester UK, Testa-Rossa website. DVD copies are produced using the highest quality Sony discs that have a white gloss printable surface and feature a silver underside. This recordable underside does have a slight magenta tinge to the silver which is characteristic of all recordable DVD-R media.

The use of premium Sony media for duplication ensures that maximum reliability and playback compatibility is achieved. Sony DVD duplication is the closest possible quality to fully glass mastered, replicated discs. Playback of these duplicated discs is identical to a replicated DVD however as a rule of thumb a replicated disc will always have a longer life span than a duplicated disc.

If you are seeking the highest possible quality of service for short run duplication of DVD the combination of Sony discs and Manchester based Testa-Rossa studios is a wise choice. There are many other companies across the UK offering cheaper DVD duplication services using inferior blank media. However for peace of mind and superior service level choosing Testa-Rossa and Sony is a no brainer.

CD album manufacturers.

Thursday, October 13th, 2011

The majority of CD album manufacturers use the replication technique to create a retail ready product. This CD manufacturing process takes place in a factory known as a pressing plant. The term pressing plant is used due to the disc information being “pressed” into the plastic by metal stampers.

These disc manufacturing companies can usually handle the replication of CD, DVD and now blu-ray.
The process for each of these products is quite similar and starts with a master disc being burnt in the appropriate format. This master is usually prepared by a separate mastering company or by the customer themselves.

Once a master has been produced it can be forwarded to the CD or DVD manufacturer together with artwork for disc print and possible packaging. Some manufacturers have their own pressing plants and some will sub contract the final replication out to pressing plants.

The UK was once home to many of these CD and DVD pressing plants but over the last few years many have closed or re-located overseas. A large percentage of UK disc manufacture is now contracted out to overseas plants. These overseas pressing plants usually have reduced manufacturing costs and as a bonus a lot of these plants contain much more modern print equipment and production lines.

Printed Card Wallets For CD Duplication.

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

One of the best value packaging options for CD duplication is the 5″ printed card wallet. This printed wallet is the type of packaging product you will find with Sunday newspaper CD and DVD giveaways. The product is usually made from 190GSM card board and is printed using an extremely high quality offset litho printing press process.

Due to the initial set up cost of manufacturing these wallets the product is considered to be cost effective from 500 units upwards. The card wallet is therefore more widely used with replication rather than DVD or CD duplication of smaller quantities. At very high quantities of 20,000 and over this printed packaging is even cheaper than a basic clear plastic wallet and can even be printed on a slightly more economical grade of board.

The size of a card wallet is usually quoted as 5″ square but more accurately the dimensions are 124mm by 124mm. The size of this wallet means that CD, DVD or blu-ray can easily be accommodated. It is extremely important that the wallet is manufactured to this exact 124mm square dimensions so that the disc fits perfectly in the wallet. If the wallet is too small then problems can occur during machine packing. If the wallet is too large the disc can easily fall out of the wallet during distribution or handling.

Artwork for a printed card wallet should be submitted on a CTP template, in CMYK colour and with image resolution of at least 300 pixel per inch. It is also wide to submit artwork with all text as vector information or outlines rather than rendering text down to pixel information. Another issue to check is that no artwork covers the “glue flap” area of the artwork as this can lead to failure of the print finishing if the glue cannot adhere to the printed area of card.

CD Duplication digipack upgrades.

Monday, October 10th, 2011

Our CD duplication services offer a full range of the ever popular digipack style of packaging. CD replication in a digipack starts from as little as 300 units but price per unit is much more cost effective once an order for 1000 or more units is placed.

All the digipack products that Testa-Rossa offer are very high quality offset litho printed onto 455 mcn white backed board. This is exactly the same quality that you will see in your local high street music store. There are some cheaper sub standard digipack style alternatives on the market but at Testa-Rossa we only use high quality print suppliers for our digipacks.

Standard digipacks start with a 4PP version, this features 4 panel printed full colour with a choice of a clear or black tray. A clear tray allows the artwork of inside right panel to be visible whereas using a black tray means there is usually no need for artwork on the inside right panel as it would not be visible under the tray.

There are many upgrades available for our digipacks. One of the most popular upgrades is a digipack with booklet slit or booklet pouch. This slit or pouch can accommodate standard sized CD booklet from 4 printed page up to 32 printed page. Other upgrades include extra panels and trays, some of the most popular are listed below

• 4PP digipack with 2 trays
• 6PP digipack with single tray
• 6PP digipack with double tray
• 8PP digipack with single tray
• 8PP digipack with double tray
• Gatefold 8PP digipack with double tray
